‘Maskne’- another 2020 problem. How can you avoid breakouts caused by wearing a mask?

So now we know that masks are here to stay, and we should all be wearing them to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, we also think it’s time to give you some helpful tips, tricks and must have products to help overcome the breakouts that are happening as a result of wearing a mask. Now we know this sounds like a very 3rd world problem and we totally support mask wearing to keep us all safe but a few changes to your skincare regime can help keep ‘Maskne’ at bay!

So why are we getting breakouts? Like us, our skin needs to breathe to function, not only are masks preventing this but they are also making our skin warmer which is dehydrating, trapping dirt and oils and also causing irritation due to constant contact. What should we be doing?

Firstly your mask… you should be changing it as often as possible, minimum daily. This is not only to wash away any potential virus that can be caught up in it but also dirt, pollution, oil, makeup and skin cells. Breathable materials like Cotton are best for skin function and can be washed at 60 degrees. Think, if dirt and oil was on your hands would you touch your face? No! So it shouldn’t be on your mask. Try to avoid wearing makeup on this part of your face, if you must then try swapping to a mineral makeup which will allow your skin to breathe.

Cleanse and Exfoliate! Wearing a mask can stop our skin from shedding as much as it needs too and therefore can begin a breakout-causing build up of dead skin cells blocking pores. Try adding the Ageless Cleanser to your evening cleansing routine around the area your mask sits. This 2 in 1 Cleanser and Exfoliator contains Glycolic Acid which will break down the bonds holding  your dead skin cells together, help encourage cell turnover and prevent breakouts. Start a couple times a week to prevent over drying. When I say ‘add’ I mean add, double cleansing is always advised to firstly wash away the nastys of the day, makeup and dead skin cells then the second to get them active ingredients working.

Hydration for the nation- Feel like your mask is making you hot? Well this extra insolation and heat will be dehydrating for your skin, not only does dehydration cause fine line and dullness but an unhappy skin barrier will further affect its function. Look out for ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid in your skincare or invest in the small but mighty Image Ageless Hyaluronic Filler. This will help your skin retain its moisture, can prevent your skin from over producing oil to overcompensate for dryness and therefore minimise the chance of clogging up your pores.

Salicylic Acid- All hail this mighty BHA. This clever acid should be the friend of anyone with oily and acne prone skin, or who wears lots of makeup. An oil soluble acid with anti inflammatory properties, does a spinning motion as it hits the skin which allows it to exfoliate INSIDE the hair follicle/pore and draw out the impurities inside. Cleaner pores mean less signs of breakouts.

Top Product… My must have product has to be the Ageless Total Resurfacing Masque. Not only does it include most of the essential ingredients mentioned above, it can be used as an exfoliator, mask and a targeted spot treatment.

As most of our clients have said after lockdown, there is nothing like a professional facial. We recommend these monthly anyway, however now is the best time to receive resurfacing, rehydration and a complex cocktail of vitamins and botanicals that provide results that are unmatchable with home care products.

All of these products can be purchased in the salon or from our online shop and posted anywhere in the uk. For any more information or recommendations, book yourself a free consultation and we look forward to seeing you soon!
